Welcome to Historic Scenes of Curaçao, which gives you a brief overview of some typical social activities of the past.

The first picture dates back to the 19th century. Women were selling fish in Punda at the 'Stadsmuur', the wall surrounding the city. The beautiful houses of Scharloo can be seen in the background.

The Market Place was another meeting place. The Waaigat, an inner bay of the harbour, was much bigger then. Nowadays there is a road where the water used to be and lots of buildings on the other side of the road. The Market Place is now under restoration by the Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao.

Eventhough the Water Plant was established in the early 1920's, these water carts were still going house to house to selling water. The reason being that especially the far ends of the island were not connected on the system. Today all houses are connected to the Water Plant, which produces the finest water in the World.

Music was and still is one of our favorite pastimes. The 'triangulo', 'raspu' and the 'kaha di orgel' are typical local instruments. A lot of music were played in the streets of Otrobanda and Punda. Curaçao has also produced some very talented musicians and musical families.
Some musicians are still dedicated to the music of the days long gone, which today we call folklore.
